My work is an attempt to capture those quiet, fugitive moments in the British landscape—a hare paused in the long grass of the Nene Valley, the flight of a Red Kite against an ironstone sky, or the winter light falling across Irthlingborough Meadows. Working from my garden studio, the physical act of carving linoleum and pulling ink on my hand-built wooden press brings me into a state of flow where time disappears and I can be completely at one with the subject.
Language serves as a foundational pigment in my practice. By embedding shredded fragments of regional poetry—particularly the works of Northamptonshire poet John Clare—into my relief prints and collages, I create visual bestiaries where language and wildlife become physically inseparable. The printed words form the fur, feather, and shadow of native species, inviting viewers to read the landscape as well as observe it.
Steeped in the classic lineage of British naturalism and relief art, I embrace the visible trace of the human hand and the honest grit of the press and collage techniques. My goal is to offer a peaceful window back into nature, celebrating regional biodiversity and inspiring active stewardship for our shared countryside.
Jamie Poole is a contemporary British artist, illustrator, and naturalist printmaker based in the
Nene Valley, Northamptonshire. Holding a First-Class Honours degree in Design (Surface
Pattern) and bringing over two decades of dedicated art education experience, Poole bridges
traditional craft with British natural history.
Working from his garden studio, he specializes in intricate linocut relief prints—hand-pressed on a custom wooden press he built himself—and complex linguistic paper collages. Grounded in the classic printmaking tradition of Thomas Bewick, Eric Ravilious, and Edward Bawden, Poole’s work incorporates the historical poetry of John Clare and the field notes of Gilbert White into the physical pigment of his subjects. His practice captures the quiet, tactile rhythms of local meadows and native wildlife.
