Vanessa Wei

Vanessa is very fond of 16th to 18thcentury Dutch Still Life as well as 19th century Abstract Art.

Painting to her means using acrylic paint, paintbrushes, or a painting knife to "perform”. Before she starts to paint, she will spend time to plan and practice in her mind of how to do the best performance on the canvas.

The mindful practice usually takes longer than the actual painting process. Once everything is well planned, the painting will be finished in one attempt without adjustment or hesitation. She allows the brush or painting knife movement to present freely on the canvas, to highlight the energy and tense motions onto the canvas.

She believes abstract art is not about "what you can see”, but "what you can feel” from it. The thickness of the paint, the movement of the brush, the bold colour exposed by the strength of the painting knife, are all performers on her canvas.

Her recent abstract painting series "Seasons” reflects the everchanging British weather. Spring is vibrant, Summer is active, Autumn is calm, Winter is complex. Can you feel that too?
